Yes. The wine glass matters. First let’s learn the history behind the variety of sizes and styles. In 1973, Claus Riedel of Riedel Glassware Company created the sommelier wine glass series. He insisted that the specific wine glasses allowed wine enthusiasts to swirl the wine without it spilling, appreciate the aroma fully and ultimately provide an extraordinary experience for the consumer. Once Mr. Riedel’s glasses were available to the public, they sold very quickly and the styles he created still remain popular today. Thanks to Mr. Riedel wine enthusiasts have the choice to choose from a variety of wine glasses such as the flute, standard, tulip, coupe, hock, vintage, trumpet, tumbler and more.

Glass or Crystal

When choosing a set of wine glasses you will want to make sure the glass is clear allowing visibility to see the true color of the wine. Crystal glasses are actually made from glass but also contain a percentage of lead monoxide, zinc or magnesium oxide, which all refract light and provide that beautiful sparkle. Crystal glasses are a perfect choice for celebrations and special occasions.

Glass Size Rules

  • Sparkling Wine – Wine glasses such as the tulip, flute and trumpet style that hold at least 8 to 12 ounces is recommended for sparkling wine.
  • Red Wine – Large standard wine glasses are recommended for red wine consumption. Choose a wine glass style that holds 16 to 24 ounces or more, with 12 ounces being the minimum.
  • White Wine – Choose wine glasses that have a minimum capacity to hold 12 ounces.
  • Dessert Wine  Because dessert wines are sweet and have a higher alcohol content, the wine glass should be smaller.

While it has been established that the actual glass does not affect the actual flavor of the wine, it does make a difference in the wine drinking experience. The size and style of the glass mostly affects your sense of smell, therefore using the correct glass allows you to fully taste every delicious note that is embedded in the wine you are drinking. For example, red wine has tannins and a variety of flavorful notes; if you are not able to swirl your wine and breathe in the scent of the wine, you will be losing out on the full wine tasting experience. Choose the perfect glass for the wine you are drinking by following the easy tips above so you can enjoy and savor every sip of wine to the fullest.
