You may be an experienced wine enthusiast, but there was a time when you were new to the wonderful world of wine and made plenty of mistakes on your journey to discovering wine. Those who are just beginning to explore wine and all it has to offer will make a few mistakes along the way too. There are five common mistakes that most people make that are avoidable.

1- Storing Wine in Warm Places – You will want to store your wine in a cool dark place in your home that is about 55 degrees (depending on the wine). You will want to store it in a place that has the same degrees on a constant basis. Avoid storing your wine in warm places that expose the bottle to light or heat. This causes the wine to reduce the strength of its flavors.

2- Drinking Before Bed – While consuming a glass of wine to help you relax before going to sleep might seem like a great idea, it’s not. It actually will disrupt or interrupt your sleep. This will leave you exhausted and groggy the next day due to tossing and turning during the night.

3- Pouring A Large Amount of Wine into a Glass – Whether you are serving yourself or guests, many wine enthusiasts tend to pour too much wine into a glass. The ideal amount is 4 to 5 ounces per glass. This allows room for swirling and smelling the wine. It improves your experience drinking wine by allowing your senses to fully savor the wine.

4- Aging Wine Too Long – While some of the most delectable wines in the world have been aged for many years, you don’t have to wait to enjoy consuming wine from your personal collection. Unless you are planning for a special occasion and you are aging a bottle for a specific reason, enjoy drinking your wine before it collects dust.

5- Consuming Too Much Wine – Let’s face it, wine is mean to be enjoyed. It is perfect for relaxing moments, romantic dates, casual dinners, celebrations and much more! But if you are regularly consuming more than two 4 to 5 ounce glasses a day, you may be putting your health at risk. This common mistake is made due to the positive health research that has been conducted on wine. While the research is true and it can improve your health in a variety of ways, it is only beneficial if done in moderation. We love wine as much (if not more) than the next person, but remember to always keep your health in mind.

Now that you are aware of the most common wine mistakes, you are sure to avoid them. This will make your experience with wine more enjoyable and allow you to inform those that are new to the wine world of these mistakes. Remember that wine is meant to be savored, shared and enjoyed. The next time you purchase a new bottle of wine, be sure to store it properly and serve the right amount to friends, family and guests.
