There are three ways to create sparkling wine and all of the techniques are capable of producing a great sparkling wine.
Carbonation Method
This method is one of the easiest ways to create sparkling wine by adding CO2. The bubbles are coarse and there is no flavor from the yeast. Sparkling wines that are created using this method are commonly the least expensive.
Champagne Method
The Champagne method uses the technique that produces bubbles in the bottle. Sugar and yeast are added to the bottle of wine and the bottle is sealed. As the yeast feeds on the sugar it expels alcohol and carbon dioxide. The yeast is then removed slowly usually using a machine. During the process of removing the yeast a small amount of wine is extracted and then replaced with fresh wine and added sugar. The amount of sugar that is added after the yeast extraction will determine the style of the sparkling wine such as extra dry or brut.
Charmat Method
This method produces bubbles in a tank or vat. The wine, yeast and sugar are placed in a vat. As soon as the yeast has completed the job the wine is transferred to bottles and the yeast is left behind in the tank. This type of method is least costly for winemakers as well as an easier way to create great sparkling wine when compared to the Champagne method.
Great sparkling wine has sweetness and plenty of bubbles that occur when the sparkling wine and the dry glass have contact during pouring. Sparkling wine is commonly used for celebrating special events, but it is becoming increasingly popular for daily use during dining experiences and much more. It is also a great option that is easy to pair with a variety of dishes and desserts, as well as for cocktail parties.
