Have you been loyal to white wine? Some wine drinkers tend to choose either red or white wine and stick with it forever. While the white wine industry is surely thankful for your dedication to their product, it’s ok to mix things up a bit and enjoy red wine too. While most red wines are oaky, there are a variety of others that are light and are a perfect introduction into the world of red wine.

  • Sparkling Reds – If you love indulging in a glass of Champagne, you will surely enjoy bubbly reds like sparkling Sparkling Shiraz, Brachetto d’Acqui and Lambrusco.
  • Wines with Less Bitterness – White wine drinkers usually do not enjoy bitter, dry red wines. You will want to choose a wine that has less tannins and made from thin-skinned grapes, such as Sangiovese, Gamay and Pinot Noir to make an easy transition into red wines.
  • Refreshing Wines – White wine drinkers that enjoy wine that is refreshing will love trying red wines such as Grignolino, Schiava, Frappato and Barbera.
  • Fruity Wines – Pinot Noir is a common red wine that white wine drinkers can easily enjoy and appreciate. If you love fruity tasting wines you will enjoy Pinot Noir which has notes of berried fruit, herbs and dried florals. You can also try a light Barbera, Dolcetto, Sangiovese or Gamay as other fruity red alternatives.
  • Low Alcohol Content – If you’re used to drinking white wine that has low alcohol content you will want to seek out red wine that matches the same level. Luckily, red wines from the Valle D’Aosta region have high acidity that is similar to white wine and has low alcohol content. It also has similar minerality that you find in white wine. Some other low-alcohol options include Vinho Verde Tinto, Bordeaux Rouge, Beaujolais and Bourgogne Rouge.

These red wine selections will allow for an easy transition into the red wine world. Once you try these red wines, you are sure to find a favorite. Wines such as Aussie Grenache, California Pinot and Frappato are also excellent recommendations. Rosé wines are a great go-between if you’re looking for a more gradual transition. Take your first step into the world of red wine today by trying these delicious options.
